PC® Children’s Charity knows what happens when children don’t eat breakfast, do you?

President’s Choice® Children’s Charity continually strives to have a more meaningful impact and reach more people, something they do successfully year after year. Today, they announced a new initiative that will roll out over the next 10 years. It is a $150 million commitment to fundraising and corporate support targeted towards addressing childhood hunger. This incredible charity has become known as one of the largest breakfast programs in schools and will continue to support nutrition education.
I consider myself lucky, I always went to school after having breakfast and my son always eats breakfast. But according to Canadian statistics, a staggering 1 child out of 5 starts the school day on an empty stomach due to a lack of access to nutritious food. In Indigenous communities’ statistics reveal that 1 out of 2 children start school on an empty stomach. In our country, approximately 1.1 million children get nothing to eat before school. The President’s Choice® Children’s Charity will be instrumental in changing this for Canadian school children. All children should have access to a healthy breakfast! Studies show that in the short-term, eating breakfast increases alertness and motivation to learn. Children also feel more agitated and irritable than adults when they get hungry which can make learning more difficult. In the long term, having breakfast is proven to lead to better academic performance, higher enjoyment of school and positive effects on brain performance. These are just a few of the reasons why breakfast is so important for children.
Galen Weston, Executive Chairman of Loblaw Companies Limited and former chair of PC® Children’s Charity, reinforced the importance in a statement made today, “As Canada’s leading grocer, with stores in most communities nationwide, we are in a unique position to bring attention, awareness, and funding to children who go unfed or underfed. As our country embarks on its next 150 years, nothing will create better conditions for success than feeding our kids. Well-fed kids contribute more to a better Canada and we are committed to providing them with the nourishment to learn, to grow and to succeed.”
Impakt is really excited by this initiative and can’t wait to witness the many impacts of this generous commitment.
